... The Mardi gras has been going on in New Orleans since the 1870s'
While tied to religious observance, in practice,
the celebrations of this day have been anything but reverent. From the middle
ages to today, large pancake breakfasts, races, and jubilation have been
associated with this date.
The observance of this date probably started in
prehistoric times. The few days of this celebration are thought to represent
the additional days added to the lunar calendar each year to make it coincide
with the solar calendar.
Because these days were outside of ordinary time,
all laws, customs, and rules were considered void. To a certain extent this
tradition continues with wild partying , masked identities, and grotesque
processions.
