The Running Of The Bulls
(THE "ENCIERRO")
, in Pamplona, Spain is held at eight o'clock each morning from July 7th to July 14th.
In 1899, it was decided to bring the bulls up to a small corral on Santo Domingo street the night before they fight in the ring
Known as the "San Fermin Festival", the event gained international fame after the 1926 publication of Ernest Hemingways' novel "The Sun Also Rises".
It usually lasts from two to three minutes - although if there are complications due to loose bulls it can last much longer.
The length of the run is some 800 metres
(about half a mile)
and you don't have to sign up anywhere to take part; you just enter into the run and try to do as best as you can to keep from getting run over.
A rocket goes off at the moment the bulls are let out into the street. A second rocket goes off to let everyone know that all the bulls are now in the street ... then you'd better start running and get ready to jump over the fence when the bulls get too close.
The 2003 Running Of The Bulls Party resulted in 11 gorings; the average amount of gorings is 7 to 10.
On July 15th there is a parody of the run made by some diehards who refuse to face the fact that the Fiesta is all over and who run in front of the early-morning bus which comes up Santo Domingo street.
